Turning Tifo Into Philanthropy
Paint, canvass and culture merge into tifo, a giant display the supporters hoist over and across their section as teams emerge from stadium tunnels onto the field. A mainstay in soccer supporters culture, the tifo is a chance for the fans in the stands to send a message to the team on the field to inspire them to greatness.
The American Outlaws construct these works of art for U.S. national teams for each match. The U.S. Women’s National Team World Cup Send-Off match in San Jose, CA on July 9, 2023, was our final chance to give our well wishes to the four-time champs before they headed to this summer’s tournament. A special moment called for a special tifo, and Ashley Taylor of AO San Jose delivered a memorable design.
While these tifos take immeasurable time and effort to create, they only last a moment before they’re folded up and rarely seen again. Instead of letting such an impactful art piece go to waste, Volkswagen has turned our USWNT World Cup Send-off tifo into a limited series of drawstring bags exclusively sold on Drive Gear. VW will also be making a monetary donation to support the American Outlaw’s efforts to grow the game of soccer in the U.S. through AO Impact.
To be a great soccer nation, we need to increase access to the game for all kids at the local level. AO Impact harnesses the passion for soccer wielded by The American Outlaws and connects it to nonprofits nationwide to boost their work with the beautiful game. VW is recycling AO’s in-game work to support AO Impact’s grassroots campaign to make soccer in the U.S. open to all.
