#AOThanksLD
For many USMNT and MLS fans of this generation, Landon Donovan has been (simply put) the face of our sport.
His resume speaks for itself… LD has more goals and assists than any USMNT player, an ESPY for 2010 goal against Algeria, 11 consecutive MLS All-Star appearances, and probably has more appearances for his country than most of us have appearances in a gym(157).
More than that, LD exemplifies what we as fans have grown to love about our yanks; grit and determination to be the best whilst growing the sport in our country.
LD has put us on the map. And he deserves every bit of recognition that we, as fans, can provide for what he has done. Let’s provide him with the proper send-off. Tweet, Facebook, & Instagram using “#AOThanksLD” and your posts will be conveyed to Landon at a later date. Best posts will be front and center.
Landon, we freaking love you. Thanks for the memories.

You will be missed but not forgotten! Mitchell Degioanni
Landon, I’d like to take the time to thank you for everything you’ve done for the sport of soccer in this country, and around the world. You’ve made an impact on so many lives, and I just wanted to take the time to thank you. I’ve admired and looked up to you, as both my favorite player and as a role model, and I am so thankful for everything you’ve done for the sport that we both love. I am a lifelong US Soccer fan. I’ve been a fan since the day I was born. With that being said, you’ve been a big part of my life over the years, as I grew up watching you play. As an eight year old in 2000, I remember watching you play your first game for the US senior team, and scoring on your debut. I remember sneaking around my house in the moonlit hours of the morning in 2002, to watch you and the USMNT play in South Korea. I remember jumping around and screaming when you scored against Mexico. Eight years later, I was brought to tears as you scored in the 91st minute against Algeria to secure the US would advance and win the group in South Africa. (That moment is immortalized as my laptop and phone wallpaper. And, Ian Darke’s call of your goal is my text message alert tone.) And now, as a grown 22 year old man, I get to bid farewell to the greatest American player. You’ve left a big impact on me, and I’m very grateful. You’ve shown me that hard work and dedication pays off, to never give up, to always give everything I have to offer, to do what makes me happy, and to take care of myself. I’ve enjoyed watching you play over the years, and I’ve been proud to call myself your fan and cheer you on. I’ve supported you at Bayer Leverkeusen, San Jose, Bayern Munich, Everton, and LA. I proudly own your jersey from each club you’ve played at, and I wear them with pride. With that being said, I’d just like to take the time to thank you. Thank you, for making the sacrifices you have made. While they were clearly not easy, you made American soccer. Thank you, for always putting EVERYTHING into every game. Thank you, for always representing the USMNT with pride. Thank you, for showing the world what the US never gives up. Thank you, for all the goals against Mexico. Thank you, for promoting and building the game in the USA at a time when it wasn’t popular to do so. Thank you, for being a role model and icon to so many people around the world. Thank you, for scoring against Algeria in South Africa in 2010. Thank you, for always taking the high road, even when it has not been easy to do so. Thank you, for gaining attention for mental health. Thank you, for being a legend on and off the field. Thank you, for growing MLS and US Soccer, and bringing them to where they are today. Thank you, for bringing so many people joy, simply by playing the beautiful game. As an American soccer fan since birth, I am eternally grateful to you. I wish you all the luck in the world in whatever you do next, and I hope you find happiness doing whatever it is. (You’ve certainly deserved it!) You’ve had a fantastic career, and will be forever remembered as the greatest American to ever play the game. You’ve been a big part of my life, and will always be my favorite player. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you, Landon. Congratulations on a phenomenal career! Sincerely, Your Fan and Friend, Michael K. Dovellos
Thank you for making me want to play the sport I love, and for furthering that passion in 2010 vs Algeria. #CaptainAmerica Aaron Zigelsky
