The Hype
Forget the failures of Germany 2011. Forget the successes of Olympic gold in London 2012. It’s a brand new year. A brand new mission: to qualify for and win the 2015 Women’s World Cup.
This week kicks of the CONCACAF qualifying tournament for Canada 2015. The USWNT will face a trio of opponents in the group stages and then proceed to the semi-finals and finals. The tournament finalists (and the third place winner) will qualify for the Women’s World Cup next year.
The biggest names in women’s soccer will again feature for the USWNT: Hope Solo, Abby Wambach, Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, Lauren Holiday, Carli Lloyd and Sydney Leroux. They’ll be joined by rising stars including Christen Press, Morgan Brian, Whitney Engen, and more. They’ll be led by Christine Rampone. Rampone heads into the tournament with 297, the most-capped active player in the world and second all-time in world history.
The roster includes 14 players from the London Olympics and 11 players with previous WWC qualifying experience. To call this team anything but “stacked-with-talent” would be an understatement.
So far in 2014 the USWNT has posted a 10-2-3 record, scoring 48 goals and conceding only 11. In WWC qualifying the Lady Nats are 22-1-0, scoring 137 goals and allowing only five.
Abby Wambach continues to punish nets across he globe as her world’ record scoring strike-rate is now at 170 goals and counting.
In the USWNT’s sights are Trinidad & Tobago, Guatemala, and Haiti and mostly likely Mexico in the finals.
Tonight the USWNT faces T&T in Kansas City at Sporting Park at 7:30pm CT. Fans can watch on Fox Sports 2.
