THE HYPE
The USMNT heads to Cleveland to face Nicaragua in the last match of the group stage of the 2017 Gold Cup. The USMNT has been underwhelming in the first two matches of the Gold Cup, drawing against Panama before narrowly beating Martinique. Alas, we sit alongside Panama with 4 points atop group B heading into Saturday's matchup. Is the USMNT in a good position to win the group? Yes. Do we need to perform at a much higher level to win the Gold Cup? Yes.
Saturday's opponent sit at the bottom of the table with 0 points, having lost to both Panama and Martinique. The USMNT has never faced the Central Americans, and the US will surely take three points...right?
Here are the rosters:
USMNT
GK: Guzan, Hamid, S. Johnson
DEF: Besler, Gonzalez, Hedges, Lichaj, Miazga, Morrow, Villafana, Zusi
MID: Acosta, Arriola, Bedoya, Corona, McCarty, Pontius, Roldan, Rowe, Zardes
FOR: Agudelo, Dwyer, Morris
Nicaragua
GK: Lorente, Maradiaga, Tellez
DEF: Copete, Arrington, Lopez, Nino, Quijano, Rosas, Tellez, Veliz
MID: Cadena, Figueroa, Galeano, Garcia, Lopez, B. Montiel, M. Montiel, Peralta
FOR: Barrera, Chavarria, Hurtado, Pavon
Simply put, the USMNT were #vulnerable at the back on Wednesday. It is #imperative that we tighten things up, from the front to the back. Bruce Arena has tinkered with the midfield against Martinique, but does that give Dax McCarty the reigns going forward alongside Kellyn Acosta? Jordan Morris certainly earned his place in this team, how will he accompany/substitute Dwyer going forward in this tournament remains to be seen.
