US vs. Turkey

After a 2-0 win against Azerbaijan last Tuesday, the USMNT faces Turkey in its second of three matches before heading to Brazil. A lackluster first half was followed by a strong final 20 minutes at Candlestick Park, with goals from Aron Johannsson and Mix Diskerud. The first half showed little in the way of positives, but late game substitutes seemed to be the difference between the two sides. Diskerud got on the end of a rebound, while the man from MO BEAL ALA BAMA headed home from a Brad Davis corner. Many speculated about the US backline, but the partnership of Matt Besler & Geoff Cameron/Omar Gonzalez, flanked by Fabian Johnson/Yedlin and Beasley/Chandler stood their ground for the majority of the match.
The focus now switches to the Turks, who like Azerbaijan will also be spending a summer off. The Turks finished a disappointing 4th in Group D of qualifying behind Holland, Romania, and Hungary. You may also remember the U.S. narrowly beating Turkey in the 2010 send-off series, with goals coming from Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey. They bring plenty of firepower to the states for these friendlies. Turkey is coming off a 2-0 win last week against Honduras in D.C., with goals from Mevlut Erdnic and Caner Erkin. Also in the team that will face the United States on Sunday are Galatasaray striker Burak Yilmaz and Atletico Madrid striker Arda Turan. Regardless, they are not going to the World Cup and we are, so that means that we are much better.
