The Hype
Whelp… the group games of the 2015 Women’s World Cup were a bit more of nail biters that we originally thought, but we disposed of a very negative Nigeria and finished TOP OF OUR GROUP. The so-called “Group of Death” as you remember. We do pretty well when FIFA tries to set us up.
Abby Wambach score the type of goal that we’ve been waiting for her to get a hold of all tournament. She’s scored 77 goals with her head (!) but her hustle play to find the cross and half-scissor volley-ish the ball into the back of the net was pure excellence. You could see the relief and release on Abby’s face in her celebration. And frankly USWNT fans across the country.
We keep on waiting for the game where this team just turns it on. Nigeria played hack-a-Shaq slowing down the emerging U.S. attack (Sydney Leroux was hungry last match!) so hopefully Colombia plays us straight up. The South American side, a bit of a Cinderella story in this summer’s tournament, has been posting plenty of bulletin board material to hype up our side.
Colombia’s star player Lady Andrade said this weekend, “We’re going to beat them since they like to talk so much.”
This coming from the player that sucker punched Wambach in their last meeting. Not cool, Lady.
So if trash talking and punches to the face don’t get the USWNT fired up for this match… we dunno what will.
